Chapter brothers Davin Drinkard, Justin Potillo, Donald Drinkard, and Warren Wiggins became the first undergraduate brothers of Alpha Chapter to compete in the MSU step show in more than five years! Although we didn’t win the step show, we broke the stigma that we placed upon owrselves and have set a fowndation for what is to come. Chapter Polaris Stanley Gross was also awarded the Unsung Hero award (Office Of Student Activities Banquet), being one of only six people at Morgan to receive the award.įinally, the last highlight of April for us was the MSU Battlegrounds Step Show. Being awarded for it only ensures that we are doing something right. Iota was birthed from the civil rights movement, and we took pride in educating the student body at Morgan on owr history. Winning this award meant a lot to the chapter, as it is imperative for us to remember the origins of owr fraternity.

Of the awards we were nominated for, we came away with Program Of The Year, which we won for owr African American Journal Project series that we hosted in February. The chapter was nominated for Chapter Of The Year (Iota Phi Theta Eastern Regional Meeting), Best Organization ( Outstanding Morgan Man Banquet, Office Of Student Activities Banquet), Best Male Organization (Office Of Student Activities Banquet), Best Greek Organization (Outstanding Morgan Man Banquet), and Program Of The Year (Office Of Student Activities). After not receiving any nominations last year, the chapter was recognized for its tremendous improvements and received numerous nominations for awards. The next highlight of the month of April was the multiple awards that the chapter was nominated for. Overall, Iota Week 2013 was a huge success and was the start of a great month for Alpha Chapter. Following this, the chapter chose to complete Iota Week with community service, volunteering in the cafeteria during the dinner hours from 4pm to 8pm. First, the chapter conducted a Faculty Appreciation Day and gave certificates of appreciation to tons of faculty members/employees at MSU that we appreciate. The final day of Iota Week was a two part affair. The event was an open group discussion, and those who came owt were fully engaged in the healthy conversation.

Thursday, the chapter hosted “The Ultimate Measure Of A Man”, an event centered upon the definition of a man. Putting a twist on the traditional ‘truth or dare’ and ‘battle of the sexes’ themes, the event turned owt to be a lot of fun for everyone who came. On Wednesday, the chapter hosted “What’s In The Box?”, an event that sparked intrigue on the campus and was purely abowt having fun. The event served two purposes, as we not only used the event as a family dinner, but the fundraiser proceeds will be divided between the Justin Izlar Foundation and other charitable causes. Tuesday the 9th saw the chapter host a dinner/fundraiser at Five Guys Burgers, everyone’s favorite burger spot. When it was all said and done, the Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma and the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta defeated the rest of the competition and proved to be the best strollers on the yard for the second year in a row. This year’s theme was #BannedFromTV, and we surely did not disappoint by any means. Morgan is known for its rich history in terms of Greek life, and owr stroll competition is consistently the livest you will experience in your life. The competition pits all of Morgan’s Greek organizations (not just limited to D9 orgs) against each other in order to see who can win the title of the best strolling organization. On Monday, the chapter hosted it’s 7th Annual Stroll Competition on campus in the MSU student center. All of the proceeds which were raised will be donated to the foundation, and we hope that Justin’s name continues to live on for a cause that is much greater than any of us could imagine.

The foundation, named after owr fallen brother from nearby Psi Chapter (Coppin State), was started after Justin’s passing in order to aid in the fight against Osteosarcoma (bone cancer).

To start the week, the chapter had a fundraiser with local restaurant Gino’s Burgers & Chicken to raise money to donate to the Justin Izlar Foundation. This year, Iota Week took place from April 7th to April 12th and was one of the best the chapter has hosted yet. Here’s a glimpse of what happened in April at “The A”.Īt the start of the month, the chapter hosted its annual Iota Week, a traditional week of events we host during the spring semester of each school year. For the Alpha Chapter, this year has been a year of transition, and the month of April saw us continue to move in the positive direction which we’ve been moving in this entire year. As the academic year winds down, it’s natural to reflect on the past and look at what you’ve been able to accomplish.
